The Christianization of Mindanao and its Impact
Heidi K. Gloria
This paper describes how the Christianization of Mindanao was begun by Jesuits and the Recollects in the late 16th century highlighting the responses of the natives of Mindanao. Since the western half of Mindanao was populated by the different groups of Muslim peoples who presumably were more socially and politically advanced, the early efforts were directed toward proselytizing and evangelizing the natives of the northern and eastern parts. The “Caragans” so-called was a denomination applied to various groups such as the Mandaya, Manobo, Bagobo, etc. Who inhabited the Pacific rim of the island of Mindanao and who were not Moros or Muslims.
